Suffolk Village of the Year 2023

Community Council News, April 2019

The Community Council did it again! Another fantastic evening of fun on the 13th April when  Cockfield really got into the swing  with the Swing Dance Party in the Village Hall, the music was all from the 1940’s and 1950’s and loads of people got into the mood and dressed in attire from the era. Over £500 was raised for Community Council funds and the Community Council will be looking to make this an annual event

This was followed by the Duck Race at Earls Meadow on Easter Saturday 20th April a full report will be in the next edition of Green Links.

Preparations for the Art Show in the Village Hall over the Bank Holiday weekend 25/26/27th May  are well underway, this is definitely a save the date event and artists are signing up on a daily basis. This is the fifth year and is becoming a staple in the Show circuit. We realise not everyone has the room to hang another painting but there are glass works, wood turning and ceramics along with some lovely cards  – something for everyone and to suit everyone’s pocket. Homemade lunches and teas are served daily, you may even get a breakfast croissant for breakfast if you are early enough.

The  Sale Trail is now confirmed on the 23rd June  – there will be the traditional map noting those houses selling items but we will also have space available at the Village Hall for tables and, depending on demand, we will use Great Green too, a booking form is on page 37. If you don’t want to sell yourself the Community Council will be having a stall so keep items to one side for them. Please contact community.council@cockfield.org.uk to arrange to donate items for this stall. Any items not sold on the day will be passed to a local charity.

The Community Council is 50 this year and as part of the Village Show on September 8th we are planning a look back over the past 50 years, anyone with any memorabilia of the past 50 years, old photos etc, pop them to one side we will be in contact.

The Show itself will be concentrating on the Flower, Fruit, Produce and Craft side of things and will be in the Village Hall. As the days get longer and work starts in the garden please think about Sowing for the Show!

We mustn’t forget about the Monthly Country and Western

Dances and on the 4th May we welcome back Budgie

Coleman and his crew for a stomping night of Country and

Western music doors open at 7pm  and tickets are £6.00 on

the door, there is also a bar and BBQ.

And now for the biggie! Saturday 16th November an evening with the Bee Gees. The tribute band – Bee Gees Disco Night Fever Band is booked and will be a rocking evening so keep the date free.

The year will close with Carols on the Green on December 17th.

I expect there will be a couple of other events popped in along the way but all these coupled with the monthly Country and Western Dances and Cinema we have a full programme to keep us busy and hopefully the Village engaged.

Cockfield Community Cinema  is usually on the fourth Friday of the month but in May because of the Art Show it is a week earlier on the  17th when we will be showing  Stan and Ollie which looks like an excellent film. The Cinema is gaining in popularity and over 100 people watched Bohemian Rhapsody in March.

Please remember we are now offering Cinema Vouchers, and very smart they are too, prices are in multiples of film entries (£4.50 each) and you can buy for as many performances as you like. If you are interested please contact Julie on 07815 497952. We post the trailers for our films on the village website, www.cockfield.org.uk, so why not have a peek and see what’s coming up over the future months

Waste paper collection

The next waste paper collection will be on Sundays April 28th and May 26th as usual, collections will start at 9.00 am. Please leave your papers out for the collectors. If you should find you have a lot of paper and card building up you don’t have to wait for the last Sunday in the month to off load it, paper and cardboard  can always be dropped off at the Dutch Barn at Cockfield Hall.

We hope you will join in with our plans and don’t forget if there is something you would like to see happen in the Village just let us know!
