Suffolk Village of the Year 2023

Community Council May News

As you’ll see from Rodney Williams’ report this month, the children’s party we held in March was a great success. Both children and parents had a most enjoyable afternoon and we are pleased, once again, that the Community Council has been able to demonstrate its ambition to provide something for everyone in the village – in this case the children. Our programme  of events for the rest of the year will hopefully appeal across the board and provide many more enjoyable social occasions.

 C & W dances

Saturday 7th June will see the return of Kevin Barry to our regular monthly C & W dances. Kevin needs no introduction to most of us and, as he commands a large following throughout the area, we expect a good crowd and a great atmosphere. The dances start at 8 pm and, as usual, we will have our licensed bar and barbecue to provide refreshment and sustenance! Admission, on the door is £6.

Our monthly dances are an important source of funding for the Community Council so please come along and join in – you’ll see the full programme for 2016 elsewhere in this edition of Green Links.

The Art Show

The Art Show will be back on 28th, 29th and 30th May – we’re getting plenty of entries lined up, so the show should be even better than last year! As well as the opportunity to buy pictures, cards and other handicrafts, there will refreshments and light lunches available throughout the three days AND admission is free!

 HM the Queen’s 90th birthday

Our celebration of Her Majesty’s birthday on Sunday 12th June will be a fine example of the Parish Council, Community Council, St Peter’s Church and the Congregational Church working together to celebrate an historic event. We plan to create a ‘street’ on Great Green and invite everyone to bring their picnics, food and drink and enjoy a street party with their friends and neighbours.  Things will get started with a service in Congregational Church, followed by a programme  of fun and games on the Green to be enjoyed by everyone whilst partaking of their picnics. If you have a gazebo, bring it along and create your own little piece of the ‘street’

The Village Hall’s 40th Birthday

To celebrate the 40th birthday of the Village Hall we have planned an evening of entertainment on Saturday 16th July. We have booked local band, Quaff, to lead the activities and, as something different, we’re inviting anyone in the village who wishes to showcase any musical or other talents they may possess to perform for us in a non-competitive ‘Cockfield’s Got Talent’ way. Please let us know if you’d like to showcase your talents to the village!

Future ideas

We’re currently investigating bringing ‘Flix in the Stix’ to Cockfield. We’ve taken a look at how other communities bring the latest (and sometimes classic) films to the villages at a reasonable price and hopefully we’ll be making an announcement pretty soon. If you’ve got any comments on this and our other events, or any ideas as to things we can do in the future, please let us know. If people let us know what they want their Community Council to do then we’ll be happy to consider any new ideas.

Don’t Forget

The Village Show will take place on Sunday 11th September – we published a list of the produce classes in last month’s Green Links, so hopefully, everyone is planning their growing for this year!

Kevin Barry will be here again on Saturday 17th September to entertain us with music from the 60s and 70s.

On Saturday November 19th we’re planning a Murder Mystery Evening – watch this space for details.

Waste paper collection

The next waste paper collections will be on Sunday 24th April and Sunday 29th May. As usual, collections will start at 9.00 am.

Community Council e-Mail list

Our e-mail list is now up and running, but we’ve noticed that not all of you have yet signed up. The purpose of the list is to enable the Community Council to communicate with its members to ensure that everyone is kept informed about what we are doing. If you haven’t already received any information from us then it is likely that you are not on the list – to get on the list visit
