Suffolk Village of the Year 2023

Community Council News, May 2019

There is a separate post on the Duck Race at Earls Meadow on Easter Saturday 20th April. More people than ever attended and the weather was brilliant, despite not a lot of water the ducks eventually got to the finish line and did very well and the eggs were enjoyed by all.

There will be an unveiling of the new Village Sign on Parsonage Green on Friday 14th June at 7.30pm, everyone is welcome and the Community Council will be serving refreshments. The sign has been carved locally and is a replica of the previous one which unfortunately rotted. The sign depicts the Village Greens and important aspects of Village life and we hope you will be able to come.

You are running out of time to sign up for the Sale Trail on the 23rd June  so fill in the booking form quickly! There will be the traditional map noting those houses selling items but we will also have space available at the Village Hall for tables and, depending on demand, we will use Great Green too, a booking form is on page 37. If you don’t want to sell yourself the Community Council will be having a stall so keep items to one side for them. Please drop off any items for sale to Newholme, Smithwood Green (in the cart lodge) or phone Janne on 828264 and collection can be arranged. Any items not sold on the day will be passed to a local charity.

The Community Council is 50 this year and as part of the Village Show on September 8th we are planning a look back over the past 50 years, anyone with any memorabilia of the past 50 years, old photos etc, pop them to one side we will be in contact.

The Show itself will be concentrating on the Flower, Fruit, Produce and Craft side of things and will be in the Village Hall. As the days get longer and work  continues in the garden please think about entering the Show!

We mustn’t forget about the Monthly Country and Western  Dances and on the 1st June it’s Country Law. doors open at  7pm  and tickets are £6.00 on  the door, there is also a bar and BBQ.

And now for the biggie! Saturday 16th November an evening with the Bee Gees. The tribute band – Bee Gees Disco Night Fever Band is booked and will be a rocking evening so keep the date free.

The year will close with Carols on the Green on December 17th.

I expect there will be a couple of other events popped in along the way but all these coupled with the monthly Country and Western Dances and Cinema we have a full programme to keep us busy and hopefully the Village engaged.

Cockfield Community Cinema  is showing  Green Book on Friday  28th June and on Friday  26th July the film will be Wild Rose. Julie chooses some excellent  films so come along for a good evening out on your doorstep. Tickets are £4.50 on the door and along with the bar there are teas and coffees as well as ice-creams and sweets.

Please remember we are now offering Cinema Vouchers, and very smart they are too, prices are in multiples of film entries (£4.50 each) and you can buy for as many performances as you like. If you are interested please contact cockfield.cinema@cockfield.org.uk. See the cinema webpage for details.

Details of all our events also appear in Green Links, and will be circulated through our Community Council   e-mail distribution list. If you wish to be included on the list, which is an excellent source of information about local events, please apply through the website by following the link in the footer of any page.

Waste paper collection

The next waste paper collection will be on Sundays May 26th and June  30th as usual, collections will start at 9.00 am. Please leave your papers out for the collectors. If you should find you have a lot of paper and card building up you don’t have to wait for the last Sunday in the month to off load it, paper and cardboard  can always be dropped off at the Dutch Barn at Cockfield Hall.

We hope you will join in with our plans and don’t forget if there is something you would like to see happen in the Village just let us know!
