Suffolk Village of the Year 2023

Community Council News, January 2017

Cockfield Community Council News

The Officers and Trustees have taken a serious look at the finances and membership of the Community Council and are planning to introduce some major changes in 2016/7.

When the organisation was set up way back in the nineteen seventies it had one aim in mind – the building of the Village Hall. Membership fees were collected to fund this project and the draw was set up as a non-profit way of keeping members interested in their membership. Since then we have continued to raise funds to support a wide range of village activities and also provide entertainment aimed to please all tastes.

We have been successful in our fundraising activities over recent years and are in a strong financial position to support any future projects which may be proposed – at this time we have been asked to support major refurbishment of the Village Hall and we are in a good position to do so.

We have therefore decided that we will make membership subscription-free from this year. What this will mean, effectively, is that membership of the Community Council will be open, free, to all Cockfield residents.

We have also decided to stop the monthly draw with March being the last time that names will be drawn from the hat.

There is one area where we will continue to administer membership and that is with regard to use of the minibus. Anyone wishing to drive the minibus must be in possession of a permit, issued by the Treasurer, which confirms that he or she meets our insurers’ requirements in terms of vehicles they are allowed to drive, age and licence cleanliness. These permits, which will be valid for one year from date of issue, will be issued free of charge to Cockfield residents, but non-residents will be required to pay an annual membership subscription of £5.

Cockfield Community Cinema

Cockfield Community Cinema will be launched in the Village Hall on Friday 27th January with a showing of Florence Foster Jenkins ). This will be followed by Bridget Jones’ Baby on Friday 24th February and Lady in the Van on Friday 24th March.  Click here  to see trailers for all these films. All shows start at 7.30 pm, with doors open at 7 pm. Admission (on the door) is £4.50 for adults and £3 for under 17s – refreshments will be available.

We very much hope that our film shows will become a regular feature on the calendar so please come along and support this new Community Council venture.

Country & Western evenings

Our Country & Western evenings are back with the first dance of the year on Saturday 4th February. Kevin Barry will be performing and I’m sure that all his fans will be pleased to welcome him back to Cockfield. In March we have Budgie Colman and in April we see the return of Declan Gaynor
