Suffolk Village of the Year 2023

Community Council News, Feb 2016

Happy New Year to everyone

We finished 2015 with Carols on the Green, although things didn’t work out exactly as planned. Wet December meant that Great Green was a bit like a bog, especially in front of the pavilion so a new venue was required…..plan A was to hold the event in the school playground, but, again, the weather had a say and we reverted to plan B which took us into the warm and dry Village Hall. Around 50 of us attended and enjoyed a splendid service, accompanied by the Norton Salvation Army Band followed by seasonal refreshments. As always, thanks to everyone involved in ensuring that the service survived the weather – the Congregational Church, St Peter’s Parish Church, the Salvation Army and, of course, those who attended.

No such weather problems for the Hangover Hike. January 1st dawned clear and bright, although a bit colder than we have become used to, and around 30 of us enjoyed an hour and a half stroll along Bruff’s Line and around the airfield. Thanks to The Horseshoes Inn for allowing us to use their car park as a meeting place and also for providing a hearty lunch for some of us afterwards.

Another date for the diary

On Sunday 20th March we will be hosting a party for children from the village. There will be an entertainer and tea with loads of fun, games and laughter for the younger (up to twelve years old) members of the community. Parents will be welcome as well. Look out for details of how to apply for tickets………

C & W Dances

The C & W dances are back! We start with Julie Dawn on 6th February, followed by Kenny Lee in March and Declan Gaynor in April. All three of these artistes have been here before and are popular with C & W followers throughout East Anglia – we’re sure that they’ll get a great reception this time.

You’ll see the full programme for 2016 elsewhere in this edition of Green Links.

2016

Don’t forget to put the rest of next year’s events in your new 2016 diary ………….

On Saturday 23rd April we welcome back Richard Whymark who had us in stitches back in 2014 and who promises more of the same for us this time.

The Art Show will be back on 28th, 29th and 30th May.

The Village Show will take place on Sunday 11th September.

Kevin Barry will be here on Saturday 17th September to entertain us with music from the 60s and 70s.

In addition we have two important dates, HM Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday on Sunday 12th June and also the Villages Hall’s 40th Birthday in July. We think that both these events demand a celebration and we look forward to making an announcement in the near future.

Waste paper collection

The next waste paper collections will be on Sunday 31st January and Sunday 28th February. As usual, collections will start at 9.00 am.

Children’s play equipment

We still need more of you to let us know your views on the children’s play equipment on Great Green. PLEASE, if you haven’t completed and returned our questionnaire, do so now as the information you provide can be vital in obtaining the grants that we need to support any future improvement project. If you require a further copy of the questionnaire please ask at Cockfield Post Office and Stores or visit the village website.
